vDesktops is the name of the Virtual Desktop environment at Arkansas Tech University. Virtual desktops are connected to via thin clients or through our web portal. Virtual desktops basically move the processing power from the desktop to the data center, allowing multiple virtual desktops to utilize the same resources from a physical server. Because this infrastructure allows for consolidation of computers, it reduces costs for power, cooling, hardware, and software. Thin clients are generally cheaper, require less power, and last longer than standard computers.
Other major advantages of vDesktops includes:
- Faster deployment of applications and desktop environments
- Ability to connect to a vDesktop resource at any time, from anywhere
- Ability to better leverage software license agreements
